AUDITIONS

Auditions for the Choral Arts Society of Davidson are held two times each year, in January and August, in Sloan Music Center on the campus of Davidson College. Fall 2019 auditions will take place (TBD).

WHAT SHOULD I EXPECT?

Auditions are 10 minutes in length and are intentionally low-key and relaxed. While we are privileged to include a number of career musicians in CASD and expect the highest quality of professionalism in our performances, we are aware that our constituency is made up primarily of local church choir members and volunteers. We invite experienced and talented choral singers of every level (high school age and above) to audition for us. A typical audition will consist of the following:

  • An audition form will be made available at the time of your audition. Please arrive 10 minutes early to complete the form prior to your audition.

  • An art song, aria, hymn, or folk song (1-2 minutes in length) of the singer's choosing. Hymnals will be provided if needed.

  • A vocal range test.

  • Pitch retention exercises--a short melody that you will be asked to sing back.

  • Sight-reading exercises.

  • Those who audition will be notified regarding the status of their audition within the week.

WHEN ARE AUDITIONS?

TBA

WHERE ARE AUDITIONS

Sloan Music Center in Room 201. The physical address of Sloan Music Center is 323 Concord Road, Davidson NC 28036.

HOW DO I SIGN UP FOR AN AUDITION?

Sign up HERE during the audition season.

Please CONTACT US if you are interested in auditioning once the audition date has passed.

WHEN DOES CASD REHEARSE?

Every Tuesday from 6:30 to 9:00 PM, August - May.

WHAT DOES AN AUDITION ENTAIL?

We ask that you sing a minute or so of a song of your choice. It could be an art song, aria, hymn or gospel song, or a folk song / spiritual. Following your solo, you will be asked to sing exercises to help us determine your range, and then you will be taken through a few exercises that test your ear and musical skills. Finally, you will be asked to sight-read a sections which we provide.

WHAT AGE DO I HAVE TO BE TO JOIN?

CASD is made up of mostly adults who are college-age and above. We occasionally allow a very mature and talented high school age (16+) singer into the ensemble, but it is rare due to the advanced level of music we sing.

WILL AN ACCOMPANIST BE PROVIDED?

Yes, and a copy of a hymnal will be provided should you need it. We encourage you not to sing a selection unaccompanied. Bring something you've prepared with a piano accompaniment, or plan to sing a hymn from the hymnals provided--with accompaniment.

PERFORMANCE SCHEDULE?

The full rehearsal and performance schedule can be found HERE. Please note: we ask that those who audition into CASD make their commitment to the ensemble for the entire season. We do not allow "cherry picking" of concert opportunities. We work together as an ensemble, and we develop as an ensemble. The rehearsal time we spend together is vital in creating the high-calibre, artistic ensemble that we have become.

WHAT DOES IT COST TO PARTICIPATE?

Singers are asked to purchase their own music (typically $30-40) and member dues help us to pay for musicians and other costs associated with our concerts. Member dues are $30 per semester or $50 per year. None of the CASD staff "make money" from CASD dues. The cost of our performances greatly exceeds what we collect in dues, but does help in offsetting the cost, particularly for our stand-alone concerts. If you find the cost prohibitive, please speak with the director during your audition.

WHO SINGS IN CASD?

CASD is privileged to have many experienced soloists and vocal music education professionals, but there are also a great many amateur choral singers (musicians who sing regularly with their church, school, college, and university choirs) in our ensemble who contribute equally.

Generally, if you have a good musical ear, a confident voice, and know how to read music (or follow really well), you should audition for us. We are always on the lookout for tenors and basses, in particular, but auditions are open to all voice parts (soprano, alto, tenor, and bass) and there are portions to be filled in each of the sections.

Above all, we seek choristers who are committed to musical discipline and artistry that leads to choral excellence. Our rehearsals are fun and engaging, but they are also rigorous--CASD singers are required to be at the top of their game every rehearsal. We learn and perform a lot of music every year, and the professionalism that we bring to each of our performances is a result of a great deal of hard work that requires attendance at all rehearsals (though two absences are permitted each concert cycle).

Singers in CASD are sometimes expected to work on their music on their own--and we provide resources as often as we can to enable each singer to do so. Our rehearsals reinforce the necessary note learning, vocal technique, and language repetition that will make you confident in dress rehearsals and performances, but each singer is expected to take personal responsibility, insofar as possible, to learn his own part flawlessly.

Finally, there is no upper age limit to CASD participation--the vocal and physical standards and requirements to be in the ensemble are the same for everyone. Singers must, however, be able to stand for long periods of time sometimes, and CASD members are occasionally required to re-audition whenever deemed appropriate by the director.
